Middle School College Visits

Youth Thrive Hosts College Visits for Middle School Youth

The cultivation of a college-going culture at school, at home, and in the larger community can have a tremendous impact on a young person’s aspirations and an overall belief that college is in his or her future.  On-campus experiences have been shown to increase both college aspirations and knowledge. Even one-day visits have the power to inspire both students and parents and inform them of the possibilities (Gear Up Oregan, 2014).

Thanks in part to a generous "Game Changer Grant" from the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation, middle school students across Wake County participated in college visits in 2018-2019. With support from our Educational Success Action Team and community partners including Southeast Raleigh Promise, the YMCA of the Triangle, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle, students visited UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T State University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Below are a few pictures from the visit.

Quotes from Participants:

“An awesome day to be around people who looked like me that had the same desires and outcomes about education, equity, and real life.” -- Student

“I thoroughly enjoyed myself as a young teen learning about the college experience and what the expectations are to get in.  I am glad I had the opportunity, at an early age, to go.” -- Student

“It was great to be on a college campus to see young adults that look like me that are taking their education seriously and breaking and dismantling stereotypes of people of color. As a parent/adult, it made me feel good that my child was able to engage, listen, participate and ask questions. Thank you to all partners and collaborators that were involved." -- Adult Volunteer
